Many types of holidays can help you enjoy your time off, be together with your family, and have a wonderful time. Skiing holidays can be great fun for you and your loved ones. However, when you are going on skiing holidays, there are several things that you must plan for ahead of time. These things include flights to get you to your destination, the accommodation that you choose to stay in when you are there, and transportation such as rail services and car hire services. All these things are important items to consider as you begin planning your skiing holidays.

Choosing A Destination

The first thing to remember when you are planning skiing holidays is the importance of the destination. There are many great ski slopes all over Europe, and lots of these places offer anywhere from a weekend to a week or more of skiing fun. Many resorts provide skiing holidays in mountain areas that are some of the most beautiful in the world. However, there are several questions that you need to ask before you choose the best place for your skiing holidays.

The first things you need to focus on while choosing skiing holidays are how long you are going to be there, the number of people who are going, and their ages. These are probably the most important factors in deciding where to take your skiing holidays. The length of your skiing holiday will have a lot to do with the destination that you choose. If you are only going for the weekend or a couple of days, you can find a remote and beautiful place to go to for your family skiing holiday. If your trip is short, your focus will be on skiing, and it won’t matter if there are not very many amenities or family things to do. The other attractions that might be in the area won’t be as important as the family ski resort itself. You want to choose a ski resort that will allow you to do as much skiing as possible in the short time you have for your holiday.

If your skiing holiday is going to be longer than a few days, the location and amenities of the place that you choose for these skiing holidays are both very important. When you are going to take a ski holiday that lasts longer than just a few days, the other things that you can find to do become much more vital to you. For a long trip, you will need other things to do, no matter how much you love skiing. You will need to make sure that you choose skiing holidays at places that have restaurants, shopping districts, entertainment, and other activities. These will allow you to take a break from skiing, and make your skiing holidays more enjoyable overall.

The ages of the people going on your skiing holidays are also very important. If you are going on skiing holidays with your children, you need to choose places that have ski lessons for children, and fun activities for them as well. With your children along, you also want to research the safety of the ski resort even more thoroughly than you otherwise would. Remember again, that with children, you are going to want to pick your skiing holiday locations where there are lots of things for them to do besides skiing.

Getting There

Once you have chosen a place for your skiing holidays, you have to decide on the best way to get there. The travel that is involved often costs more than the actual skiing. However, there are many deals on flights and packages to various destinations for skiing holidays, if you know where to look. If you can save money on airline flights, you will have more money to spend on your skiing holidays.

The accommodation that you choose is also an important part of planning skiing holidays. Whether you stay on the actual site of the family resort, or somewhere near the slopes, you want to be able to get there easily each day to ski. Remember, if you are staying at the place where you are skiing, it might be more expensive. However, your ski slope fees will usually be included. If you find an accommodation that is much cheaper than the resort, but where skiing is nearby, you might find this to be less expensive, but you probably will have to pay for the ski slope fees.

There are other things to consider as you plan your skiing holidays. Things like rail services that can get you to your destination, and whether or not you want to do a car hire are all decisions that you have to make before you leave on your trip. You will find that if you take the time to plan your skiing holidays before you go, you will be able to relax and enjoy them much more.

The history of skiing is an interesting one. As the story goes, skiing was preceded by snowshoeing, or so we think. When Sondre Norheim, a Norwegian now heralded as the “father of modern day skiing”, invented the ski binding, skiers were able to turn while moving downhill - “Slalom” (also known as Telmark skiing) was born! Skiers used the new movements and skills more as a practical means of moving from one location to another through the snow but, soon, as better and more effective binding was created, allowing more freedom of movement on the skis, the practice began to morph into one of fun, challenge and finally sport.

In fact, just 75 years ago, very few people had ever heard of Alpine skiing (also known as downhill skiing). Alpine skiing was something only a handful of people knew about and it was predominately practiced in the European Alps. During the evolution of downhill skiing, there were a couple of hotels and overnight lodging accommodations in the Alps that remained open during the winter, but they were few in number and far between. During the winter season they housed a small sprinkling of cold-weather adventurers who came to the Alps to test their newly acquired skills on the snow.

Within a matter of a few decades, however, the Alpine skiing population went from a few hundred to the now ever growing number of forty million! Skiers from all corners of the globe now head to the mountains at the first hint of a good snowfall. With skis in hand they will travel to any of the major mountain chains rising up in forty countries. Every continent, including Antarctica, is home to at least one good skiing mountain.

Vail lodging and accommodations are separated into four distinct villages. These include Vail Village, Lionshead Village, East and West Villages. These areas of the Vail Valley all offer unique lodging options for those looking for everything from luxury vacation rentals to cozy condominiums. Below is some information to help guide you to your ideal Vail lodging.

Vail Village Lodging

A vacation to Vail Village is what Colorado mountain getaways are all about. Vail luxury hotels and lodges offer a level of refinement not found in other resorts. Many lodging accommodations in the Vail Village serve up ski in / ski out access to North America’s largest ski resort. Some choose this area for it’s direct access to slopeside lodging at the Vista Bahn Lift. Looking for some nightlife? In the Vail Village, you are surrounded by a long list of clubs, restaurants and bars.

Lionshead at Vail

Nestled at the base of the Vail Ski & Mountain Resort, the Lionshead Village offers unmatched location to Vail’s only gondola. Just steps from the Lionshead Vail Gondola, this unique alpine village affords sophisticated hotels, lodges and luxury condo rentals. Grab your skis or snowboard and let the spacious Vail gondola whisk you to the top of Eagle’s Nest where you will experience jaw-dropping scenery of the Colorado Rockies. Descend North America’s largest mountain resort and relax in the comfort of your own Lionshead Village lodging in Vail.

East Vail, Colorado

The East Vail lodging area rests at the base of the Gore Range. Here, Vail recreation is literally out your front door. From many of the East Vail vacation rentals and condominiums, you can hear the roar of the nearby cascading waterfalls. In the winter, East Vail is well known for challenging ice climbing. Many vacation goers fill their day with skiing at the resort and then relax in the comfort of their own secluded mountain home or condo rental. East Vail also provides Vail luxury rentals for those looking for sophisticated lodging. Explore hidden snowshoe trails and endless hiking. The summer months in East Vail provide sensational biking trails for those looking for a little exercise. This area is just 5 miles from the Vail Village and Lionshead. Enjoy the free transportation which runs from East Vail to all other areas in the Vail Valley.

West Vail, Colorado

The ideally situated West Vail lodging area lies directly adjacent to the ski resort. Here, the excitement of Vail is a stone’s throw away while still providing solitude and convenience. West Vail provides affordable lodging, luxury condominiums, shops, restaurants and supermarkets. West Vail has everything from hotels, vacation rentals, Vail lodges, homes and several hotels. West Vail caters to recreation enthusiasts looking for direct access to hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding and even ice skating. An interesting afternoon can also be spent visiting Vail’s historic ski museum.

Choosing your Vail lodging should be fun and easy. To book a Vail CO hotel and plan your Vail vacations, contact the Colorado Travel Company at 970.372.4628.

Many parents are familiar with the family-oriented mission of the YMCA programs. Located in urban areas internationally, this kid friendly organization offers many educational, sports, and social opportunities. The YMCA of the Rockies, Colorado also operates two budget vacation resorts that help families get out and enjoy the legendary beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Snow Mountain Ranch and Estes Park Center are nondenominational programs open to any guest. However, members receive a slight rate discount and have their reservations processed first.

In addition to opportunities to enjoy the mountains, summer children’s programs operate daily for ages three through 16. Age appropriate activities include hiking, hayrides, roller skating arts and crafts, campfire cooking, orienteering and archery.

In winter, families can spend the day cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on 125 miles of groomed trails, and return to the resort to warm up in the indoor pool. Estes Park and other prominent winter activity destinations are nearby.

Lodging options include cabins and lodge rooms. Cabins range from two to five bedrooms and include a fireplace and fully equipped kitchen. Rates begin at $138/night. Lodge rooms have two queen beds and a set of bunk beds. Rates begin at $64 during off-peak times. Accommodations are not luxurious but then you are on a budget, right?

The YMCA also offers many opportunities for family camps if you want to recreate the magic of scout camp with your loved ones. Many of these camps offer the traditional horseback riding and canoing, but today, they’re adding modern activities as well. It’s not unusual to find rock walls for climbing and rappelling excursions.

You can stay in modest cabins or platform tents at a bargain rate – as low as $50 per night!

Have you always wanted to go to Europe but thought it was out of the realm of possibility when it came to your pocketbook? That’s not necessarily true!

If you’re on the look out for Copper Mountain Colorado lodging, there are quite a few options available. Copper Mountain is said to be where the locals go to do their skiing in Colorado. With its award winning trails that takes into account any skill level, it has become a popular place for both families and singles.

When deciding where you’ll stay in Copper Mountain, think about how many of you there are at first. Although it may make sense to have two couples stay in a double room, you may feel differently part way into your trip. Sharing fees can be great but lack of privacy can wear on your nerves after a while. If you decide on a suite instead with only one bedroom and a pull-out sofa, you could alternate who gets the private bedroom.
